«Ο Νίκος Γκατζογιάννης (Nicholas Gage) γεννήθηκε το 1939 σε ένα απομακρυσμένο ελληνικό χωριό της Ηπείρου, τον Λια, και το 1949 διέφυγε στις ΗΠΑ με τις τρεις αδελφές του, κατά τη διάρκεια του εμφυλίου πολέμου. Σπούδασε σε σχολεία του Γουόρτσεστερ της Μασαχουσέτης και κέρδισε υποτροφία για τη Σχολή Δημόσιας Επικοινωνίας του πανεπιστημίου της Βοστόνης. Το 1964 πήρε μεταπτυχιακό τίτλο από τη Σχολή Δημοσιογραφίας του πανεπιστημίου Κολούμπια και ξεκίνησε δημοσιογραφική σταδιοδρομία περνώντας από το πρακτορείο Associated Press και τις εφημερίδες The Boston Herald Traveller, The Wall Street Journal και The New York Times, όπου εργάστηκε από το 1970 ως το 1980. Εκείνη την περίοδο έγραψε τρία βιβλία για το οργανωμένο έγκλημα, καθώς και δύο μυθιστορήματα. Του απονεμήθηκαν τα βραβεία Hearst, Page One Award της Newspaper Guild και Sigma Delta Chi.

Το 1980 εγκατέλειψε τους Times, για να γράψει την ιστορία της ζωής και του θανάτου της μητέρας του. Η "Ελένη" μεταφράστηκε σε είκοσι έξι γλώσσες, ανακηρύχθηκε βιβλίο του μήνα, προτάθηκε για καλύτερη βιογραφία από την Εθνική Ένωση Βιβλιοκριτικών και έλαβε το βραβείο Heinemann ως το καλύτερο βιβλίο του 1984, από τη Βασιλική Λογοτεχνική Εταιρεία της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας. Η κινηματογραφική ταινία "Ελένη" με πρωταγωνιστές τους Τζον Μάλκοβιτς και Κέιτ Νέλιγκαν, προβλήθηκε το 1985. 

Το επόμενο βιβλίο του, "A Place for Us", επαινέθηκε ευρύτατα ως ένα συγκινητικό έπος για την εμπειρία των σύγχρονων μεταναστών, ενώ τα βιβλία που έγραψε για την πατρίδα του, "Hellas" και "Greece-Land of Light", επαινέθηκαν για την "έκφραση μιας σχεδόν ευλαβικής αγάπης για την Ελλάδα", όπως επισήμανε το The New Yorker.Επίσης του έχουν απονεμηθεί 5 τιμητικοί τίτλοι διδάκτορα, ενώ το 1985 του απονεμήθηκε ακόμη ένας από το πανεπιστήμιο της Βοστόνης. Είναι ενεργό μέλος της ΑΗΕΡΑ και του Συμβουλίου Απόδημου Ελληνισμού, ενώ το 1988 τιμήθηκε από τον πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίο με τη διάκριση του Άρχοντα, Διδάσκαλου του Γένους. Επίσης διετέλεσε πρόεδρος της Πανηπειρωτικής Ομοσπονδίας».
