100 Years Athens College History
1925 Founding of Athens College
On August 13, the Association known as "Hellenic-American Educational Foundation" is established and its statute is approved for the founding of an all-boys school.
1925 First Students
The first 15 students outside the rented building on Androu street, in the center of Athens.
1925 Scholarship Fund
The Scholarship Fund is created. Its founders and first donors are Stephanos Delta and his wife Penelope, daughter of Emmanuel Benakis.
1925 Boarding School
The Boarding School is launched at the same time as the School. In the 1960s, it houses more than 230 boarders annually.
1927 Benaki Hall
The School's landmark building is inaugurated in Psychico. Its west wing will be completed in 1948.
1929 Founding Law
The Athens College Founding Law is passed, allowing deviation from State Programs and the introduction of innovative elements from schools abroad.
Seven-year Program
The new pioneering seven-year program is introduced in High School. The program will be abolished in 2000.
"A" Association
The "A" Association is established for the School's elite athletes.
1949 Community Outreach Program
The Student Community raises funds for the reconstruction of schools after the war. More than 20 destroyed buildings will be built all over Greece.
1962 Academy of Athens Award
The Athens College Student Community is awarded by the Academy of Athens on its national social outreach program.
1963 Teaching Fellows
The Teaching Fellows program with young graduates from US universities is introduced.
1967 Fund Drive
The Alumni Fund Drive Association for the support of the School's Scholarship Program in established. The Parents and Alumni Parents Associations will later follow.
Co-ed School
Athens College becomes co-educational. The first 41 female students enter Grade 2 of Elementary School.
1980 Psychico College
The second school unit of the College is founded, initially only with an Elementary School, housed in Psychico.
1984 Adult Education Programs
The Adult Education Programs are launched, offering a variety of courses in different disciplines, centered on lifelong learning. The Programs are open to the greater public.
1996 International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is implemented in the High School level. The Middle Years Programme and Primary Years Programme will later be introduced in the lower levels.
2014 "John M. Carras" Kindergarten
The model dual language "John M. Carras" Kindergarten is established, with sections for Pre-K and Kindergarten.
2024 Extension of Founding Law
The Athens College Founding Law is extended for both Psychico College and "John M. Carras" Kindergarten.
