Our Neighborhood

Our Neighborhood

Feb 9, 2021

Our School's students learn that they are part of a larger whole.  They are students in a big school, while at the same time they live and grow in a big city, in districts and neighborhoods each with their own distinctive feature and characteristics.

Thus, as part of the first 2nd grade interdisciplinary unit of inquiry, students became acquainted with the structure and operation of a district, in order to understand the importance of each member towards the whole, to learn the needs, rights and obligations of each member, as well as to realize the impact that each member’s stance and personal choices have on the wider community.

As a final project of the Interdisciplinary Unit of Inquiry, “Our Neighborhood,” all 2nd grade students were supposed to jointly build their own neighborhood in our School’s Small Theater.  However, due to the prevailing situation and the need to observe protection and safety measures, students of each section created the neighborhood of their dreams within their respective classroom. Before doing so, they watched an online presentation by an architect, saw neighborhood design plans, discussed and jointly decided the form that their own neighborhood would have, as well as created posters and invitations for the inauguration of their neighborhood.  Thus, they became young inquirers while developing their creativity, imagination, critical thinking skills and social awareness.
