Athens College Elementary School Commemoration of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising
Grade
2γ students learned
about the events that took place in our country 48 years ago, with the help of
audiovisual resources, as part of the celebration of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising. Students shared their thoughts and feelings on the values of
freedom and democracy, and through a range of activities they developed a
better understanding of the importance of unity in achieving a common goal.
The
students, reflecting on what they learned, painted original works of art, and set
up a painting exhibition in their class. Their drive to express themselves and
to interact led to them taking on an active role in the celebrations, by
recreating historical moments. They actively pursued their participation in the
presentation that their Grade was responsible for.
And
they succeeded! They made their mark, opening the doors of the School’s Main
Theater. With the guidance and support of Music teacher, Ms. D. Souyioul, students sung with their lovely voices “Tα Παιδιά ζωγραφίζουν στον τοίχο” (Children
are Drawing on the Wall”); “Tον Δρόμο” (“The Road”) while keeping the rhythm with their
sticks; they also recited poems and slogans for the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, and the National Anthem. Through their recitations, students communicated
the importance of solidarity and justice to all the School’s students.
The
students’ excitement is evident in their reflections: “This was my first celebration
at the Elementary School!” said Nicholas. Daphne added “The colors of all our
shirts created a rainbow”, and Regina reflected that “The celebration was
amazing.” The snapshots will give you a taste of what our students experienced!
