Athens College Elementary’s "Young Reporters for the Environment" collaborate with Reporters from Özel Çanakkale Açı Ortaokulu school in Turkey regarding the impact of the 2021 fires

May 9, 2022

The Athens College Elementary "Young Reporters for the Environment", in collaboration with the Reporters from Özel Çanakkale Açı Ortaokulu school in Turkey, wrote an article regarding the impact of the fires that affected their countries in the summer of 2021.

Through the "Young Reporters for the Environment" competition, organized by the "Foundation for Environmental Education", the English section of 6ε in the Athens College Elementary, under the supervision of English teacher Ms. S. Apostoli started its collaboration with the same section of Grade 6 in the Özel Çanakkale Açı Ortaokulu school in Turkey. The students co-authored an article titled "Wildfires and Climate Change".

The fires that affected both countries in the summer of 2021 were the starting point for the students to investigate the causes and impact of fires, to recognize the connection between fires and climate change, to discuss with people who experienced them first-hand, and to meet online with Mr. Stavros Dimas, European Commissioner for the Environment and Climate Change (2004-2009), who addressed their questions on climate change.

Students then suggested ways to prevent and respond to this phenomenon.

The Athens College Elementary students who participated in this research initiative are: Bilfeld David, Brili Melita, Chanioti Ourania, Chatzopoulos Angelos, Fragaki Maria,  Kapsanis Theodoros, Linardos Dimitrios, Nezis Stergios, Papandropoulou Lydia, Stamelou Natalia, Vlastou Isavella.

Congratulations to the students and teachers for their initiative to explore issues regarding the environment and its protection. In their own way, they are raising awareness and making us more responsible when it comes to protecting the most valuable good: nature.

See all the projects by the Athens College Elementary  Grade 6 students.
