Athens College Elementary School - English Department: Exploring the world of bees with Dr. Petanidou

Mar 27, 2025
Elementary School 6 students from the English Department and Ms. Rapti's class became "journalists", having the special honor to interview Dr. Theodora Petanidou, Professor Emeritus of Biogeography and Ecology at the University of the Aegean.

Dr. Petanidou, who has extensive research experience in many European and American countries, has dedicated much of her recent work to studying the threats facing the Aegean's wild bees - particularly those posed by the climate crisis. She spoke to the students about the vital role of pollinators in maintaining ecological balance, the risks they face, and practical ways to support local bee populations without disrupting the ecosystem. The students were especially intrigued by the LIFE 4 POLLINATORS project, which focuses on preserving pollinators and insect-friendly plants.

At the end of the meeting, the students guided Dr. Petanidou on a tour of our School's forest, highlighting its special features and bee-friendly trees and plants.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Petanidou for her visit, her insightful and engaging interview, and the meaningful discussion.

As she herself emphasized:

“…beyond everything, interactions make the difference.”
