Athens College Elementary School - English Department: Getting to know Hymettus, learning to protect nature
Mar 27, 2025
As part of our ongoing efforts to foster environmental awareness within our school community, Elementary School 6 students from the English Department and Ms. Rapti's class had the opportunity to learn about the nearby mountain, Hymettus, from environmental chemist and Vice President of the environmental association "HYMETTUS", alumnus Mr. Filoktitis Veinoglou '63.
Students explored Hymettus's history and ecological significance. As Mr. Veinoglou explained, its importance extends beyond its remarkable biodiversity to its crucial position in Attica. He discussed the threats facing the forest ecosystem and ways to restore its balance. Emphasizing our personal responsibility toward nature, he remarked:
"It is wrong to plant a tree and then forget about it; if we plant it, we need to take care of it, water it, follow its progress - in other words, adopt it".
We sincerely thank Mr. Veinoglou for accepting our invitation and for reminding us our deep connection to the world around us.
