ΟJohn Sutherland είναι ομότιμος καθηγητής της ΝεότερηςΑγγλικής Λογοτεχνίας στο Univercity College του Λονδίνου. Έχει διδάξει φοιτητές σε όλες τις βαθμίδεςκαι έχει γράψει ή επιμεληθεί περισσότερα από είκοσι βιβλία. Το βιβλίο του Lives of novelists: a history of fiction in 294 lives (2011) απέσπασε εξαιρετικά εγκωμιαστικέςκριτικές και σημείωσε μεγάλη επιτυχία, ενώ η Μικρή ιστορία της λογοτεχνίας (πουπρωτοκυκλοφόρησε στα αγγλικά το 2013) μεταφράζεται σε πολλές γλώσσες.Αρθρογραφεί τακτικά στην εφημερίδα Guardian κι είναι αρχισυντάκτης στην προσεχή έκδοση Oxford Companion to Popular Fiction.
