Antaios Chrysostomidis (1952 – 2015): author, translator, journalist

Biography

“Author, translator and journalist Antaios Chrysostomidis (1952-2015) was born in Cairo in 1952.  He studied architecture at the School of Architecture of the University of Rome and practiced the profession until 1982… His career then moved on to mass-circulation magazines and he collaborated with the newspaper “Avgi” where he penned the literary page “Strolling” (Peridiavazontas).  In 1998, Antaios Chrysostomidis became the director of the foreign literature division of Kastaniotis Editions, editing author’s works from around the globe and setting a world standard for other Greek publishing houses.  He translated into Greek the works of Italo Calvino, Antonio Tabucchi (all works that circulate in Greek), Curzio Malaparte, Alberto Moravia, Dario Fo, Leonardo Sciascia, Dino Buzzati and other Italian writers.  In 1999, together with Antonio Tabucchi, he published “A Book Full of Stains” (Agra Publications).  He also published “Leonidas Kyrkos, the momentum of renewal” (2011) and “Tuning into My Era,” volumes I and II (2012 and 2013, respectively), under Kastaniotis Editions.

From 2006 to 2013, along with Mikela Chartoulari, Antaios Chrysostomidis was in charge of the documentary series “Tuning into My Era” which aired on ERT.  The series presented renowned, existing foreign writers in their living and working environments to the Greek public. As a translator, he taught post-graduate courses in translation at the University of Athens and the European Literary Translation Center (EKEMEL).  In 2003 he was awarded the National Prize in Foreign Literary Translations for his translation of Antonio Tabucchi’s novel “It’s Getting Later All The Time.” In 2004, the Italian Republic knighted him with the Order of Merit for Labour in recognition of his contribution in disseminating Italian culture.

Antaios Chrysostomidis died unexpectedly on August 14, 2015, in Athens, following complications from health-related issues.”
