Biography

Dario Fo, the multi-talented celebrity, was born on March 24, 1926 in Sangiano, near Varese, Italy.  Amongst the many hats he wore, he was a playwright, director, actor, and set designer.  He studied architecture which he abandoned to become involved with the theater, initially as a set designer and later as an actor, and, of course, as a playwright and director.  He performed in many of his works, whilst writing many more for the Italian national radio station and cinema.  His stage plays are characterized by anti-conformism and strong social satire.  Many of them, in particular “Comic Mysteries,” “Accidental Death of an Anarchist,” “Seventh Commandment: Thou Shalt Steal A Bit Less,” “Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay!,” and “Archangels Don’t Play Pinball” have enjoyed international acclaim.  In 1997 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.  His works have been translated into numerous languages and performed in theaters around the world. Fo died on October 13, 2016 from pneumonia at the age of 90.
