Almost 180 years have passed since the time that Professor John William Draper made the first clear daguerreotype of a celestial body. Still, as familiar as we have become with images which are regularly published by the world’s great observatories, photographs capturing the dark sky continue to spark our imagination.

The new exhibition of works, entitled “Between Heaven and Earth,” by the young and already recognized Fanis Matsopoulos opened on Monday, February 2^nd at the Eugenides Foundation.  It is sure to charm lovers of both astronomy and art.  Images of astronomical objects shot with telescopes can be viewed alongside night shots of landscapes and archaeological sites over which one can distinguish stellar orbits and the galactic zone, as well as photographs of astronomical instruments found at the National Observatory of Athens.

Along with approximately 50 new photos, Fanis Matsopoulos presents his first planetarium show, thus formally earning a position worldwide among the younger filmmakers for dome-shaped planetarium screens.

The digital presentation of “A Journey to the Universe” is, according to its creator, “a comprehensive documentary” lasting 42 minutes, which includes “absolutely true images captured by the largest telescopes in the world,” such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the ground-based telescopes of Chile.  Fanis Matsopoulos took upon himself the collection and proper image-editing of the photos, as well as the film editing, leaving the scenario to his father, Nikos Matsopoulos, who happens to be an astronomer at the National Observatory of Athens and manager of the Visitors Center at the Penteli Observatory.

Suitable for Junior High and High School students, as well as adults, “A Journey to the Universe” provides easily understandable information about the structure of the universe, the solar system and history of astronomy.  At the same time, it offers viewers an opportunity to take in the stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies through the lenses of the most sophisticated telescopes, just as though “they were there” says their creative designer.

Εικόνες, βίντεο, εκθέσειςΓεννημένος το 1991, ο φοιτητής ηλεκτρολογίας και αυτοδίδακτος φωτογράφος Φάνης Ματσόπουλος έχει ήδη καταφέρει να κάνει το όνομά του γνωστό στον χώρο της αστροφωτογραφίας, δημοσιεύοντας εικόνες σε αστρονομικά περιοδικά, αναρτώντας βίντεο σε ιστοσελίδες όπως του European Southern Observatory και της ESA-Hubble Space Telescope, και πραγματοποιώντας εκθέσεις σε χώρους όπως το Μουσείο των Γενικών Αρχείων του Κράτους - Μουσείο Ηπείρου, η Δημοτική Πινακοθήκη Κορίνθου και, το 2013, στο Ιδρυμα Ευγενίδου. Ακόμα, προσκλήθηκε και συμμετείχε με έξι φωτογραφίες στο σημαντικό διεθνές φεστιβάλ αστροφωτογραφίας του Πλανηταρίου Νεχρού, στο Νέο Δελχί.

«Στην Ελλάδα η αστροφωτογραφία είναι πολύ ανεπτυγμένη», υποστηρίζει. «Για μια τόσο μικρή χώρα, υπάρχουν πολλοί ερασιτέχνες αστροφωτογράφοι –αρκετοί μάλιστα είναι πολύ καλοί– και αυτό κάνει εντύπωση στο εξωτερικό». Παραδέχεται, βέβαια, πως ακόμα και εκτός Ελλάδος η αστροφωτογραφία «είναι χόμπι», αφού ελάχιστοι κερδίζουν τα προς το ζην από τα έργα τους.

Οι εικόνες αστρονομικών αντικειμένων, που θα απολαύσουν οι επισκέπτες της έκθεσης «Μεταξύ ουρανού και Γης», δεν έχουν υποστεί καμία επεξεργασία πέρα από την ανάδειξη των χρωμάτων - όπως συμβαίνει σε όλες τις αστροφωτογραφίες, που βλέπουν τα φώτα της δημοσιότητας είτε προέρχονται από αστεροσκοπεία είτε έχουν τραβηχτεί από ερασιτέχνες.Οι φωτογραφίες του βαθέως ουρανού «είναι αποτέλεσμα μεγάλης έκθεσης», η οποία επιτρέπει την καταγραφή λεπτομερειών και αποχρώσεων, που δεν διακρίνονται με γυμνό μάτι, εξηγεί ο Φάνης Ματσόπουλος. Με την επεξεργασία, «τα χρώματα φαίνονται πιο έντονα, όχι όμως και αλλαγμένα». Φυσικά, δεν πρέπει να ξεχνάμε ότι δεν πρόκειται για «επιστημονικές φωτογραφίες», αλλά για εικόνες που απευθύνονται στο ευρύ κοινό.

'Οσον αφορά στη δημιουργία μιας πλανηταριακής παράστασης, η σκέψη υπήρχε εδώ και αρκετό καιρό στο μυαλό του: «Πάντα μου άρεσε να φτιάχνω βίντεο, animation και time lapse», τα οποία αναδεικνύονται ιδανικά σε μία οθόνη σαν του Ευγενιδείου Πλανηταρίου - «μία από τις μεγαλύτερες στον κόσμο», υπενθυμίζει.
