10 Days at Crazy Gran’s
"A novel about xenophobia and the constant moving of people from one place to another, about habits that change from place to place and from one period to another. It is a novel about harmonious co-existence.”
Laurie Keza. 10 Days at Crazy Gran’s. Athens: Metaixmo, 2016 (Εφηβικό Μ ΚΕΖ)
*The book is suitable for Junior High School 7th and 8th grade students*
“Virginia and Caroline’s parents need to be away on business during the same ten-day period. The girls, therefore, go to stay with their American grandmother at her farm in Vilia: a grandmother who has traveled from Toulouse to Zaragoza on motorbike, who was present at the May 1968 Paris uprisings, who has friends from Japan and Sweden. When they reach the farm, the girls learn that their grandmother has begun taking classes in Arabic from her friend and neighbor, a Lebanese who breeds horses. During those ten day, the girls will take a stationary trip on the old motorbike; they will belly dance; they will pitch a teepee in the garden; they will find photos of their grandfather from his time in Africa and wonder whether he took advantage of the natives in order to get rich. This is a novel about xenophobia and the constant moving of people from one place to another, about habits that change from place to place and from one period to another. It is a novel about harmonious co-existence.”
