Information session on Alzheimer's for Elementary students
On Friday, December 16, 2022, the educational program "Learning about Alzheimer's disease" was held in our Εlementary Schools by the Alzheimer Society of Athens, as part of the ongoing efforts implemented by the Social Welfare and Diversity department to raise awareness about significant issues affecting our society. The presentations were attended by the 4th, 5th and 6th grade students of both Schools and the program was implemented by the psychologists of the Alzheimer Society of Athens, Maria Papagianni and Anastasia Stathourou.
The presentation was interactive and was mainly focused on student participation. Our students asked several questions, observed carefully the presenters and played problem solving games.
The children's Alzheimer's awareness program "Learn about Alzheimer's" aims to provide necessary information about dementia to children.
The necessity for such activity arises from the fact that, at the moment, in Greece there are 200,000 people suffering from Alzheimer's disease, while, in the future, this number is expected to increase dramatically. The main goal of the program is that, through simple, easy to understand activities and games, children are able to identify and comprehend the special characteristics of people with dementia, which will strengthen family ties with affected grandparents, as well as to inform them about ways to prevent the disease .
The Alzheimer Society of Athens is a non-profit organization, founded in 2002, by relatives of people suffering from dementia and health professionals with an expertise in Alzheimer's disease. Their purpose is to inform and raise public awareness, to support people suffering from dementia as well as their family network, to mobilize social networks and organizations to defend patients’ rights and improve their quality of life as well as that of their caregivers.
