Athens College begins its Centennial celebration

May 29, 2024

In less than a year, Athens College will celebrate a century of brilliant history and contribution to education and society (1925-2025). In the context of the Centennial, events and activities are planned that will highlight the achievements of its long trajectory, as well as the pioneering institutions that have shaped its unique character. This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate, reflect, and set goals that will give new momentum to the vision of the School's founders.

On the "threshold" of the Centennial, on May 23 and 24, two pre-celebration events were held at the Psychico campus, in the main hall of the CAPPS building, "bringing to life" the emblematic dining hall of the Boarding House.

The first event was addressed to supporters and friends of the School, while the second was addressed to old boarders from Greece and abroad, graduates from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Athens College President Professor Spiros N. Pollalis presented the activities planned for the Centennial celebration in 2025, including - among others - anniversary events, educational conferences, and artistic events. He reviewed the most important milestones of the College's 100-years with special reference to the pedagogical innovations, the School's institutions and the importance of the Scholarship Program, which is a key factor in the socio-economic pluralism of the School's student community and a fundamental element of its unique character.

At the May 23 event, he emphasized the campaign launched by the College, on the occasion of the Centennial, to attract donations to strengthen the School's Endowment, which ensures financial stability in all circumstances. At the second event, he focused on the history of the Boarding House and its importance to the College. He concluded his speeches on both days by presenting the strategic objectives of the School, which continues the tradition of implementing educational innovations and pioneering educational programs and supporting the continuous professional development of its teachers.

The past was then connected to the present when students Panagiotis Klidonas, Sophia Moutsopoulou and Kalliopi Patera spoke of their experiences of the College today, praising the opportunities offered by the School.

On Friday, May 24, in an atmosphere of intense emotion, more than 150 old boarders met in the beloved dining hall of the Boarding School, reminisced about their student years, sang and left their own special mark on the evening.

During the evening, Alexis Phylaktopoulos '65, Vice President of the Board of Directors and son of the Director of the Boarding School George Phylaktopoulos (1932-1970), Alexandros Nehamas '64, member of the Board of Trustees of Athens College in Greece, as well as old boarders Kostas Petropoulos '59, George Krousaniotakis '59 and Stavros Stefanakis '59 spoke of their Boarding House memories.

The School's beloved teacher at the time and Boarding House resident Xenophon Verginis, also took the stage sharing very emotional words with the audience.
