“Flame of Hope” Torch Lighting Ceremony

Feb 28, 2019

Abu Dhabi was selected by the International Special Olympics Committee to host the upcoming Special Olympics World Games that will be held between the 8th and 22nd of March, 2019 in the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.  Over 7,000 athletes from 170 countries are expected to participate.

The “Flame of Hope” torch lighting ceremony of the Special Olympics World Summer Games “Abu Dhabi 2019” took place on February 28, 2019 at the Zappeion Megaron.

Immediately following the Torch Lighting Ceremony, the flame began its journey to the UAE with the torch relay run that took it from Zappeion Megaron to the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Athens – a distance of 8.5 km.  The flame was carried by Special Olympics athletes who were supported by members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics – else, Guardians of the Flames.  Along the route which passed by historical and cultural monuments of Athens, students from both public and private schools offered encouragement to the athletes.

Our School had the honor of being invited to the Ceremony.  Members of the “A” Association, as well as student volunteers from Athens College and Psychico College High Schools, took part in the torch relay run.

Accompanying our students were Physical Education teacher, Solon Sanitois, and IB CAS Coordinators, Jennifer Potter and Stella Tsali.
