Athens College Students Place 1st in STEM STARS GREECE Finals

Athens College High School Sophomores (A΄ Lyceum) Myrto-Vasiliki Alexopoulou, Pavlina Refene and Amalia-Christina Toutziaridi took 1st place in the Final Round of the STEM STARS GREECE competition.  Under the guidance of their teacher Mr. Andreas Karampelas, the students who entered the Competition as the team “FeelWrite,” submitted their project titled

“Mood Diary: An Application to improve our mood and mental health.”

It involves computing software that accepts the user’s text (his/her diary), detects dominant emotions or emotional mood swings, and then suggests activities or engagement with specific works of art that will help to improve the user’s state of mind.

Twenty-seven teams from both public and private schools around Greece reached the finals of the STEM STARS Greece competition. The winning team was awarded on Sunday, March 28 in a special ceremony held by the U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Geoffrey Pyatt, and the Hellenic Minister of Education, Ms. Niki Kerameus at the Athens Science Festival 2021.

The competition, organized by the U.S. Embassy in Athens, in collaboration with and the Greek nonprofit organization SciCo, was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.  It was part of a series of initiatives supported by the U.S. Embassy in Athens to commemorate 200 years of friendship between Greece and the United States of America.  

The “FeelWrite” team will represent Greece for the first time at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) https://www.societyforscience.org/isef/ that will be held online from the 3rd the 6th of May, 2021.
