Preeminent Greek shipowner John Angelicoussis Dies
The College is profoundly saddened by the loss of the great Greek shipowner, John Angelicoussis.
Not only was John Angelicoussis a preeminent leader in the world of shipping, throughout his lifetime he proved himself a true patriot, a genuine Greek, who with his attitude and actions in a most competitive field honored Greek shipping and promoted the Hellenic Navy. His passing will leave a void.
His contribution to his homeland is particularly significant for both its breadth and the unassuming and discreet manner in which it was given. A modest and humble man, John Angelicoussis gave generously without fanfare and without seeking publicity and personal prominence. He identified himself with the sea and the Hellenic Navy and was proud to fly the Greek flag, instead of one of convenience, on the vast majority of the ships in his fleet.
John Angelicoussis wanted his beneficence to remain in the shadows, out of the limelight. Yet only light shone and dominated the lives of all who benefited from his giving. Athens College and the entire College community express their deepest condolences to his family and associates, particularly his wife Elizabeth, his daughter Maria, and his sister Anna, a member of the Association of the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation.
We wish Maria fortitude and strength as she continues the work of her distinguished father at the helm of the family business and in his tradition of charitable acts. We are confident she will place her own special imprint on this saga of great achievements begun by her grandfather, Antonis, many years ago in Kardamyla, Chios.
