Professor Ares Rosakis ΄75 Awarded Horace Mann Medal
Athens College is proud of its former student, Ares Rosakis ΄75, Professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering, who was awarded the Horace Mann Medal, given each year by Brown University Graduate School to an alumnus or alumna in recognition of his/her significant contributions in his/her field.
Ares Rosakis graduated from Athens College in 1975 and continued his studies at Oxford University where he earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in engineering science. He went on to earn his Sc.M. (1980) and Ph.D. (1982) degrees in Engineering (solid mechanics and structures) from Brown University.
Rosakis, who joined the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) faculty in 1982, currently serves as its Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering. From 2003 to 2009 he served as director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories of the California Institute of Technology (GALCIT) and as chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science from 2009 to 2015.
The Greek scientist has distinguished himself in a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary fields, from to Geophysics and Seismology to the durability of aerospace materials and micro-electronic and opto-electronics structures and devices.
He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2016 and is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. At the same time, he is a Corresponding member of the Academy of Athens. Rosakis is the recipient of numerous awards, such as the Theodore von Kármán Medal (2016) and the Timoshenko Medal (2018). He has published over 250 research articles and book chapters in peer reviewed journals and is the holder of 13 U.S. patents.
