IB DP participation in project on raising awareness among teenagers regarding addictive substances
Year 2 IB DP students of Psychology HL 2-3 participated between January 15th to February 6th in the educational programme Boys and Girls under the supervision of Mrs. Arianna Karakosta and in collaboration with the School's Counselling and Career Guidance Office. The project is supported by the European Union programme of Civil Justice (2007-2013) and Mrs. Karakosta received relevant training in specialised seminars.
During six teaching periods students discussed the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and in particular the prevention of usage of addictive substances such as alcohol, smoking and drugs. The program has already been applied and evaluated with very positive results in many schools in different European countries and it is addressed to adolescents aged 13 to 19 years old. It is based on an online animation that was developed especially for the purposes of this project. Students were prompted to discuss issues such as how someone decides to resort to addictive substances, how teenagers can protect themselves and also help their friends.
