Students from the Athens College Elementary Grade 6 French class of Mr. A. Souflas won the 1st Place Award for the A1 Level in the National Francophone Competition 2022, on March 16, 2022. The competition was organized by the French Institute of Greece and the Collaboration and Educational Initiatives Department of the French Embassy in Greece, in partnership with all French-speaking embassies in Greece. There were approximately 6500 entries this year.

Students were asked to explore and select 4 animals from each family and to create a game with 7 cards, one for each family. Once they drew each of the animals, they searched online for a French saying which they translated verbatim in Greek.

After a very productive brainstorming, students identified similar sayings in Greek, English and Spanish which they recorded under the translations from French. Finally, the students designed masks with animals which they wore for a class picture.

Through this initiative, students came to realize that different peoples share common ways of expressing human behavior, borrowing elements from nature. This led them to the realization that traditions broadcast global messages.
