Architectural team selected to design the new Athens College Arts Building

Jul 18, 2022

A design proposal by FIORE Architects has been chosen for "The D.Daskalopoulos Arts Building" within the premises of Athens College - Psychico Campus. The complex includes an educational center, an exhibition area, an amphitheater, an underground parking facility as well as an outdoor space.  It will be funded by Dimitris Daskalopoulos, Athens College alumnus.

The FIORE Architects team consists of Florian Liakos, Alexios Visvinis, Irene Marcantonatou, Angeliki Dimitroulopoulou, and Ioannis Petropoulos (in collaboration with Sotiria Smirnaiou).

Their design proposal was awarded a prize at the Open Architectural Ideas Competition organized jointly by Athens College and Dimitris Daskalopoulos’ SYNNEON non-profit organization. The Open Architectural Ideas Competition attracted 64 highly aesthetic and creative architectural entries from which the international committee shortlisted four leading architectural ideas which were each awarded a cash prize.

The FIORE Architects’ proposal is simple yet compelling. It makes efficient use of a comparatively small building volume with a minimal environmental footprint. The main idea is that the educational center is arranged on a single level with a well thought out, versatile and clearly articulated functional structure which includes interconnecting classrooms and studios that have direct access to the surrounding outdoor spaces.

The building fulfills the organizers' vision for an Arts building that is distinct and recognizable.

Overall, the design fulfills the majority of the competition’s criteria, fully incorporates the building’s functional requirements, is easily and directly accessible to people with disabilities, and complies with all rules and regulations required to obtain the licenses necessary for its construction.

“The D.Daskalopoulos Arts Building” on the Athens College Psychico Campus will be completed by Athens College’s 100th anniversary in 2025. It will host the International Baccalaureate (IB) Arts Program as well as junior and senior High School courses for both Athens and Psychico Colleges. Beyond its main function as an educational center, it will operate as a creative space for the wider community and create, through its exhibition spaces and public arts programs, a cultural platform for collaborative and educational projects.

This project will position the Arts Building as a leading cultural center in the local area and a reference point for arts educational institutions both nationally and internationally. Its programs will benefit Athens College students and alumni, artists and members of the local community.
