Professor Costas Synolakis gave a lecture at the 44th Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space Research

In his capacity as Professor of Natural Hazards, Athens College President Costas Synolakis ’75 gave a public lecture at the 44th Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space Research -COSPAR on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall. His speech was entitled: “Geophysical catastrophes that changed history in the Eastern Mediterranean – what you don’t know can hurt you”.

This international conference has been characterized as the “Space Olympiad” and is organized in a different continent every two years. This year it is held in Athens on July 16-24. More than 3,500 lectures will take place, while leaders from top Space Agencies ( i.e. NASA, ESA, CSA etc) will participate in round table discussions and speak of issues such as climate change, the prediction of space weather, the challenge of the connection between science and business and the use of small satellites for sustainable development.

A concert with a mission…

During COSPAR, on Friday, July 22 at 7.30 p.m. the Pan-European Concert for Life on our Planet “ALPHA MISSION - ΔELOS & The [uncertain] Four Seasons” that took place on the island of Delos will be broadcast at the Megaron Athens Hall (room A. Trianti). 

The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), together with Ukrainian & Russian musicians, and soloists, the Ukrainian born rising star Diana Tishchenko (violin) and Greek virtuoso Sokratis Sinopoulos (lyra) participated in this concert that has already been viewed by more than 1.000.000 people.

The concert was organized by the World Human Forum & ARTE in partnership with Europa Nostra, the Hellenic Space Center, the National Research Center for Natural Sciences “Demokritos", the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, Megaron the Athens Concert Hall - and in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades.
