"Empowered Flowers" - October & November 2023
This year at the Athens College Junior High School a new club called “Empowered Flowers” was created and operates in cooperation with the Social Cooperative Enterprise “Power of a Flower”.
The “Power of a Flower” business employs young people with neurodevelopmental disorders who grow Greek plants and flowers, weave original bouquets and deliver them themselves to their subscribers daily. Through the cultivation, production, and distribution of plants and flowers, “Power of a Flower” advocates the integration of people with special needs into society, offering them employment, skills acquisition, and socialization.
The main goal of the Empowered Flowers Club is to include this activity into the School, since the inclusion of people with disabilities in society is a great basis for the change we want to see in the world. So, in addition to informing both the members of the Club and the entire student community about how a Social Enterprise works, our collaboration in the production of the flowers, the composition and the sale of the flower arrangements will help students raise awareness, thus helping not only people with any special needs, but also themselves.
Students of the Club secured a spot on the College Campus suitable to be converted into their own "garden" so that they could experience first-hand the "art" of flowering and have a place within our School where they could work with members of "Power of a Flower". In addition, they visited the "Power of a Flower" estate in the airport area where a team of "Power of a Flower" employees, volunteers, psychologists - were warmly welcomed!
