Athens College Distinctions at the 6th World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY 2023)
On Saturday, December 2 and Sunday, December 3, 2023 the 6th World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY 2023) was held in a hybrid (on site and online) format. Our School participated in the final with 2 team projects in the High School category and 2 projects in the Elementary category.
The following projects were awarded in the Competition:
Students Vasilios Perrotis IB2 and Dimitrios Toubezoglou of the Athens College High School Grade 3 with the project "HarBot" won the "AI Excellence" Award in the AI Showcase category. The project involves the implementation of full automation of port logistics with the use of Deep Reinforcement Learning. More specifically, the students implemented the Deep Q-Networks (DQN) algorithm using a combination of penalties and rewards to train a Machine Learning model to make optimal decisions to maximize the flow of containers in port areas and minimize waiting/loading time.
Students Stelios Antoniadis IB1, Georgios Hainis of Athens College High School Grade 2 and Nikolaos Chalazonitis IB1 with the project "BiteBuddy AI" won the Bronze Medal in the category AI Large Language Model. Using prompt engineering, the students created a chatbot capable of suggesting cooking recipes for healthy meals, depending on the different tastes of its customers. The chatbot takes into account the cost budget of the meal, the time available to the customer and whether the customer has the necessary ingredients.
Student Christos Kanellakis of the Psychico College Elementary Grade 6 with the project "Clean Oceans" won the "AI Excellence" Award in the AI Showcase Elementary category. The project involves cleaning the coastline from plastic trash with the help of a Machine Vision model capable of detecting plastic bottles, glass cans, and other objects.
Andreas Karampelas, Athens College Professor of Computer Science, was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award.
Amalia Toutziaridis (Gold Award High School WAICY 2021), a 2023 graduate, was awarded for her contribution to this year's event with the Outstanding Young Judge Award.
Congratulations to all the students, alumna, and faculty of the College on their outstanding achievements!
