Educational mission of the Athens College High School Friends of Military History Club

May 9, 2024
From April 22 to 25, 2024, 25 students of the Athens College High School Friends of Military History Club visited Belgium, accompanied by their teachers T. Asimakopoulou, I. Koula and E. Haratsi.
Our wonderful journey to the popular battlefields of Europe began with the crusading castle of the magnificent Ghent. We continued with the legendary battlefield of Waterloo, almost 12 kilometers south of Brussels. There we visited the Museum of Waterloo and the Tomb of Leo. We finished as "war correspondents" with historic Flanders and the Museum of the Ypres, where we took part in a four-hour educational program. We searched for the causes of great battles, studied maps, donned World War I campaign uniforms, and handled for the first time up close items of war equipment: rifles, grenades, flamethrowers, rifles, rifles, tunics and helmets.
Our educational visit to Belgium could not have been completed without a tour of the fairytale city of Bruges and the cosmopolitan city of Brussels. Throughout the visit, the weather was our ally, as it seemed that the Greek Spring had accompanied us to Belgium, and so we had the opportunity to enjoy unique experiences: we tasted fine food and drinks, tasted the famous Belgian chocolates, got to know some of the most famous Belgian cuisine, and got to know some of the most beautiful places in the world.
