A Farewell to our beloved Ioannis Koutouzis
Ioannis Koutouzis (1932 - 2024)
Ioannis Koutouzis, our School's beloved Physical Education teacher, coach of Athletics and Gymnastics, passed away at the age of 92. Originally from Kalymnos, Ioannis Koutouzis was also known as "Dynamite" for his intense dynamism, and had always been an iconic figure of sports both on and off the field.
From 1958 he worked as a Physical Education teacher at Athens College from where he retired in 1991, leaving his imprint on generations of students and graduates of the School. He was the one who envisioned and developed the sports association club at the College nearly half a century ago, creating the SAKA Athletics Team, which participated in national championships.
He was also a member of the Panathinaikos football team and then a gymnast of the Club.
For his many years of contribution to sports he received important distinctions. Among others, in October 2015 he was awarded by Panathinaikos and in June 2023 by the Hellenic Gymnastics Academy.
His last visit to our School was in June 2024, where he reunited with old students at the Class of 1974 50th Anniversary Reunion.
Ioannis Koutouzis was married to teacher Fani Kapella and they had two sons: Theodore, who died at a young age after a car accident and Manolis, distinguished scientist, who was recently appointed first Dean of the Hellenic Open University. Both had graduated from Athens College.
The entire College family expresses its sincere condolences to his family. He will always be remembered on our School's fields coaching his beloved students.
