Νovember 17 Anniversary at Athens College Junior High School
On Thursday, November 14, 2024, the commemoration of the anniversary of the events of the Polytechnic was held at the College Theater. Every year on such days we celebrate. We celebrate because we want to remember. We want to remember what is lost when democracy is destroyed in a country. We want to remember, so that we can move on. But one more thing. We want to remember the Polytechnic, because it shows us that even if everything goes wrong and similar dark pages are rewritten in the history of man, he will know how to win back his freedom, his dignity, his democracy. The aim of this celebration was to recount a period of Greek history which, although began as a tragedy, ultimately achieved something undoubtedly great, thanks to the democratic civil society: to establish the most stable and mature democracy we have ever had since the foundation of our state.
This year, of course, in addition to the 50th anniversary of the Greek Republic, Athens College is celebrating 100 years since its foundation. This occasion gave birth to the idea and the need to include our School in the celebration. In other words, to learn how its people experienced the period of dictatorship. What did it mean for the everyday life of a student? Did the books change? Did the teachers change? What was the feeling inside the classroom? Did the College's founding law play a role in all of this? So we asked Mr. Tefkros Michaelides, an alumnus and retired teacher of the School, to do us the honor of sharing his memories with us. We thank him from the bottom of our hearts for his time and the valuable material he entrusted to us.
We would like to thank Mr. Socrates Kougeas for his guidance, Mr. Epaminondas Zafiris and Mr. Christos Polyzos for their participation and Mr. Tefkros Michaelides for granting the interview.
