The Athens College family is proud of its former student, the world-renowned Professor of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Paul Alivizatos x78, who has been appointed as the 14th President of the University of Chicago by the University’s Board of Trustees.

Professor Paul Alivizatos spent his school years at Athens College. He  is also a University of Chicago alumnus, having received his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and having completed his PhD in Physical Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley where he has assumed the positions of Professor, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost since 1988. He is also a Professor and the Samsung Distinguished Chair  in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research in the Department of Chemistry and the former Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

According to a Thomson Reuters poll he is ranked fifth in the list of the world's top 100 chemists, has been awarded with more than 25 major awards and honors, including the National Medal of Science, the highest science award in the United States, the Wolf Prize in Chemistry and the Priestley Medal. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and many other scientific bodies and organizations.

His scientific research has yielded more than 50 patents and his inventions are broadly used in Biomedicine and QLED television screen technology. He is also the founder of two prominent nanotechnology companies: Nanosys, Inc. and Quantum Dot Corp (now part of Thermo Fisher).

 He will assume his new duties on September 1, 2021.
