Mar 31, 2025
Students from Psychico College Junior High School, as members of the Youth Training at the United Nations Club, visited the United Nations Office in Geneva. At a time when global challenges and human rights issues are more pressing than ever, this visit allowed them to witness international organizations in action, understanding first-hand how decisions that shape our world are made.
The visit to the United Nations Building in Geneva was the highlight of this experience. The students had the opportunity to attend sessions and get to know the decision-making processes on the international level. Through interactive presentations and guided tours, they gained a deeper understanding of UN operations and the impact of international agreements and efforts on global crises, including wars, refugee displacement, and climate change. The exposure to the work of the United Nations, and the emphasis placed on the structural changes promoted to defend peace, security and prosperity, made the students understand the critical role of cooperation and solidarity on the international stage.
Another key experience was the visit to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The students watched presentations on the work of the organization in facing humanitarian crises and providing help in areas affected by natural disasters and wars. The necessity of humanitarian aid and protection of the rights of refugees and civilians in war zones was particularly emphasized.
The visit to the International Labour Organization (ILO) included a comprehensive explanation of the evolution of labor rights globally. Through discussions, the students gained insight into challenges faced by workers, as well as the importance of strong institutions that promote justice and equality.
Finally, our students were informed about the protection of human rights internationally, the state of human rights in countries with oppressive regimes, the fight against modern slavery and violence against women, but also the efforts to prevent violations of fundamental freedoms. By engaging with these international organizations, students broadened their understanding on the need for protection of human rights globally and strengthening international cooperation to eliminate injustice.
Overall, participating in this educational journey gave the students a full picture of international relations and the institutional structures governing our world. Connection with these organizations increased the students' knowledge on politics, economics, human rights, and humanitarian action, while they acquired a practical and theoretical perspective on world issues, acknowledging the importance of solidarity and international collaboration in addressing modern challenges.
